Firaxis is continuing its efforts to revitalize Civilization 7 with a significant free update scheduled for the week of June 22nd. This upcoming patch, version 1.4.1, will introduce the highly requested hotseat multiplayer mode, allowing players to compete locally on a single device.
Hotseat multiplayer marks the first major new feature to be implemented since the "Test of Time" update in May. That update aimed to address widespread player criticisms regarding Civilization 7's user interface, perceived departures from the series' traditional gameplay, and a general lack of features at launch. The "Test of Time" update was Firaxis's response to over a year of player feedback and iteration, promising a substantial free overhaul.
Beyond hotseat play, version 1.4.1 will also feature a completely redesigned Archipelago map style. This new variant, built with advanced Voronoi generation, offers a highly randomized experience, though the original Archipelago map will remain available under the name Archipelago Hemispheres.
Several core game systems are also receiving attention in the update. Players can expect revamped Governments, Happiness, and Celebrations systems. These changes are set to introduce new Happiness stages, provide new passives and updated celebrations for governments, and allow for the unlocking of Government Traditions that will have a lasting impact across different Ages, permanently influencing a civilization's historical progression. The update will also include various bug fixes and general improvements that will be detailed at a later time.
Alongside the free update, the first part of Civilization 7's new paid content, "Brush & Blade," is also set to release. This content focuses on Korean and Japanese history, featuring new leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Heian Japan and Sengoku Japan civilizations, four new Wonders, and profile customization options. The second half of the "Brush & Blade" collection, which will introduce admiral Yi Sun-sin and the Goryeo and Joseon civilizations, is planned for release later in the summer.
