Civilization 7 has received a significant update, version 1.4.1, which introduces local hotseat multiplayer, a feature long-absent from the series. This update allows players to gather around a single PC, taking turns to manage their empires in a manner akin to a board game.
Beyond the addition of hotseat multiplayer, update 1.4.1 brings substantial changes to city management and governmental systems. Cities can now exist in one of five distinct moods, communicated through emoji, which players must manage as their empires progress through different eras. These moods directly influence the bonuses provided by different government types. Switching governments now grants exclusive traditions that offer boosts, such as increased settlement happiness near wonders or enhanced culture generation from great works. Additionally, celebrations have been shortened from ten turns to six, but the themed bonuses they provide are now more impactful and occur more frequently.
The update also introduces a new archipelago map type, designed with Firaxis's latest landscape generation technology for increased randomness and a more organic feel. The original archipelago map has been retained and renamed Archipelago Hemispheres.
This free update coincides with the release of the first part of the Brush and Blade DLC, which focuses on historical Japanese civilizations and introduces Toyotomi Hideyoshi as a new leader. A second part of this DLC is expected later in the summer.
