Paradox Interactive has announced that the landless adventurer lifestyle in Crusader Kings 3 will be made available as free content for all players later this year. This playstyle, which allows players to roam the game world as the leader of a mercenary band or a traveling knight without holding any titles, was previously a feature within the 2024 Roads to Power expansion.

Game director Alexander Oltner explained in a developer diary that the landless adventurer role was initially conceived as a transitional state for players, such as a deposed ruler or a dynasty member seeking to make their name. However, Paradox observed that this playstyle has become exceptionally popular, with custom landless adventurers starting in 867 now representing the most frequent campaign starting point by a significant margin. This unexpected player engagement has led to the decision to integrate the feature into the base game.

The change is planned to coincide with the release of the Silk and Silver expansion, which focuses on merchant gameplay, during the final months of the year. This will allow any owner of Crusader Kings 3 to pursue a path of rising from humble beginnings, working for rulers, and gradually expanding their influence and camp.

While some specialized purposes and contracts associated with landless adventurers may remain exclusive to the Roads to Power expansion, Oltner stated that making the core concept free will remove thematic constraints. This will enable the development team to dedicate more time and resources to the adventurer playstyle as a concept, allowing for further content development and innovation on its own terms.
