CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. This latest figure represents a five million unit increase since the studio last reported sales numbers in November, when the game had reached 35 million copies sold.

This sales achievement marks a notable turnaround for the ambitious title, which experienced a troubled launch in 2020. At its release, Cyberpunk 2077 faced widespread criticism for its performance, particularly on consoles, leading Sony to temporarily remove it from the PlayStation Store. CD Projekt Red has since dedicated significant resources to improving the game and rebuilding player trust.

Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski commented on the milestone, stating, "40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best — creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years." He further described the sales success as "a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime arriving this fall."

The developer is actively working on future installments within the Cyberpunk universe. As of April, 163 employees were engaged in development for Cyberpunk 2, codenamed Project Orion. While details remain scarce, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith has offered some insights. He revealed that the sequel will introduce a new city in addition to Night City, describing the new urban environment as "like Chicago gone wrong."

Pondsmith also indicated his involvement in the sequel's development, noting he had reviewed scripts and visited CD Projekt's studios to observe progress. Keanu Reeves, who reprised his role as Johnny Silverhand in the original game, has expressed a strong desire to return for Cyberpunk 2. Pondsmith has confirmed he has found a way to incorporate the character and has encouraged Reeves to reach out.

CD Projekt Red's immediate focus remains on The Witcher 4, with Nowakowski suggesting that Cyberpunk 2 is unlikely to release before 2030. For comparison, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has achieved over 65 million copies sold and is set to receive a new expansion next year.
