Wizards of the Coast is bringing back Queen Ehlissa’s Marvelous Nightingale, a potent and historically sinister artifact from the early days of Dungeons & Dragons, in the upcoming supplement Arcana Unleashed. This mechanical songbird, originally created in 1976, has a storied past filled with conflicting accounts of its origin and purpose, ranging from a benevolent memorial to a dangerous prison for an unknown supernatural force.

D&D designer Amanda Hamon explained during a recent press preview that the development team has been revisiting older campaign settings like Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms to reintroduce characters and items that have long been absent from the game. While Queen Ehlissa herself may not have had a prominent role in previous lore, her Marvelous Nightingale artifact captured the imagination of designers at Wizards of the Coast, notably Patrick Renie, who spearheaded the magic items section of Arcana Unleashed. Renie sought to adapt the artifact for D&D’s current ruleset, viewing it as both a tribute to the game’s history and an opportunity to explore classic magic items in a modern context.

The newly reimagined Marvelous Nightingale is depicted as a golden mechanical bird with crystal eyes and a winding key. When activated, its song can be heard up to 300 feet away for 10 minutes. During this time, it projects an Aura of Truth, forcing creatures within a 15-foot radius to make a saving throw or be compelled to speak only the truth. The artifact also possesses six rechargeable charges that can be used as a bonus action to cast spells such as Calm Emotions, Slow, Compulsion, Greater Restoration, Prismatic Spray, and Delayed Blast Fireball. Additionally, it can cast Detect Evil and Good and Speak with Animals without expending charges, and Counterspell once per day. This grants the Nightingale considerable utility, capable of debuffing enemies, shutting down enemy spellcasters, and providing offensive power with its more destructive spells.

Beyond its active abilities, the artifact comes with randomly determined minor beneficial properties and one major beneficial property, typical for items of its power tier. It also carries a single minor detrimental property, a significant departure from the often dire curses associated with its previous iterations. The original artifact first appeared in Eldritch Wizardry, a 1976 supplement by Gary Gygax and Brian Blume.

Accounts of the Nightingale's origins vary wildly. One narrative from 1993’s Book of Artifacts portrays Queen Ehlissa of Ahlissa commissioning the mechanical bird as a memorial to her beloved pet nightingale. This version suggests it was crafted over a year by the kingdom's finest artisans. However, other, more sinister Greyhawk lore, reportedly gathered by archmage Mordenkainen, posits that the bird's construction involved dark magic and that it served as a containment vessel for an unnamed supernatural entity that Ehlissa kept imprisoned. Early versions often depicted the bird within a cage, a feature absent in the new description.

Further complicating its history, some older versions included mechanics where the contained power could break free, leading to the bird's owner’s soul being destroyed and their body possessed. Another iteration from the Book of Artifacts inflicted a gradual descent into childlike behavior on its owner, induced terror, and led to permanent stat reductions and experience level loss over time. The new version in Arcana Unleashed largely dispenses with these debilitating curses, though the Zone of Truth effect maintains the artifact's thematic link to enforced honesty. The methods for destroying the artifact have also been updated; previously, it might have been given to a mythical king of songbirds or smashed by a strong tinker gnome. Now, the only known method of destruction involves releasing it into a whirlwind in Limbo, hinting at its otherworldly nature.

With Arcana Unleashed, players will have the opportunity to wield Queen Ehlissa's Marvelous Nightingale once more, offering a unique blend of utility and power while retaining a fragment of its mysterious and dangerous past. Arcana Unleashed is scheduled for release on September 15, 2026.
