Actor Dan Stevens has been officially cast as Alex Murphy, the titular cyborg lawman in Prime Video's upcoming RoboCop television series. Deadline reports that Stevens will step into the role, famously originated by Peter Weller in the 1987 original and later portrayed by Joel Kinnaman in the 2014 reboot.

Stevens is recognized for his performances in television dramas such as ITV's "Downton Abbey" and FX's "Legion." His filmography also includes major productions like Disney's "Beauty and the Beast," "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," and "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb." Notably, he has prior experience portraying an artificial being, having starred in the 2021 German science fiction film "I'm Your Man."

The RoboCop series, an eight-part production from Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, was confirmed in July. The franchise's co-creators and co-writers, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, are set to executive produce. Peter Ocko will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, with James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett also executive producing for Blumhouse Atomic Monster.

According to Amazon MGM's initial announcement, the series will center on a large technology conglomerate that successfully persuades a city to integrate a powerful robot into its police force. This robot will be implanted with the consciousness of a recently fallen officer.

The original 1987 film "RoboCop," directed by Paul Verhoeven, was a sharp satire addressing themes of unchecked capitalism, gentrification, and corporate greed. It has since been acclaimed as a landmark science fiction and action film. The franchise expanded with two sequels, "RoboCop 2" and "RoboCop 3," alongside various television adaptations, comic books, and video games. The 2014 remake, starring Joel Kinnaman, received a mixed critical response.
