Destin Daniel Cretton is reportedly in line to direct the upcoming fifth Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film, according to a new report from Deadline. Cretton previously helmed Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a critical and commercial success that is nearing $2.5 million at the box office and stands as the third highest-grossing film of all time. It is also currently the biggest film of 2026.

Despite the success of Brand New Day, Cretton's schedule has been a point of discussion regarding his potential return. He has expressed interest in a Shang-Chi sequel for years, and while its development remains uncertain, a fifth Spider-Man movie appears to be a more concrete prospect. Cretton's current commitments include a Hawaii Five-O movie and a live-action Naruto adaptation. Notably, he will not be returning for a second season of Disney's Wonder Man due to the series' cancellation.

The earliest available slots in Marvel's release schedule for a new Spider-Man film are in 2029, though this does not preclude an earlier release if production timelines are expedited, similar to Brand New Day which filmed last summer for a release less than a year later. Marvel's slate for the coming years includes Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027 and X-Men, Ghost Rider, and Black Panther 3 in 2028.

Tom Holland has reportedly discussed continuing as Spider-Man for several more appearances. However, he has also hinted at a future transition of the role to a new hero. The potential introduction of a live-action Miles Morales in Spider-Man 5 is a possibility, especially as Sony's animated Spider-Verse trilogy featuring the character concludes. Cretton's involvement, if confirmed, would see him returning to the franchise he helped make a massive hit.
