Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Diablo 4 will not receive further expansions, as the studio redirects its development resources towards the newly announced Diablo 5. The decision was revealed during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026.
Diablo 5 is scheduled for release in Spring 2029 and will be set 100 years after the events of Diablo 4, in a world where the titular Lord of Terror holds dominion. Diablo game director Brent Gibson stated in an interview with PC Gamer that the team's focus has shifted from additional Diablo 4 expansions to the ongoing seasonal content and the development of Diablo 5.
Gibson explained that the story arc for Diablo 4, which culminated with the Lord of Hatred expansion, has reached its conclusion. The narrative will now transition to explore the "story of Terror." Despite this shift, support for Diablo 4 is not ending. The game's seasonal content will continue to unfold, serving as a narrative bridge to the events of Diablo 5, even with the significant time jump between games. Blizzard intends to gauge player reactions to seasonal updates to help shape the overarching story of Diablo 5, though Gibson acknowledged that the future narrative is not yet fully defined.
Diablo 4 is the first game in the series to have received more than one expansion. While initial announcements suggested annual expansions, this pace did not materialize. The Lord of Hatred expansion launched in April of this year, approximately 18 months after the game's first expansion, Vessel of Hatred.
In addition to the conclusion of its expansion cycle, Diablo 4 will introduce a new playable class, the Amazon, as standalone DLC next year. The game's Season 15, titled Hell's Legacy, is set to begin on September 15. This upcoming season will feature the return of familiar locations and items, as well as the character Deckard Cain. Players will be tasked by the Hordadrim to confront echoes of the Prime Evils from previous Diablo titles.
