Blizzard has rolled back a significant and widely criticized change to Diablo 4's Mythic items in a surprise patch released on July 16 for PC, with console versions to follow on July 17. The update removes the restriction that allowed players to equip only a single crafted Mythic item at a time, a feature introduced with the "Season of Death Awakening."
In addition to lifting the equip limit, the patch also increases the drop rates for Mythic and Iconic Mythic items from the new seasonal Lair Boss. However, another contentious addition, the Mythic Upgrade function of the Horadric Cube, will not see immediate changes. This function currently transforms a Unique item into a different, often unrelated, Mythic Unique item, a mechanic that has caused confusion among players. Blizzard has stated that this system will be adjusted in Season 15, several months from now.
Dan Tanguay, design director for live service on Diablo 4, addressed player feedback regarding Mythic Unique drop rates, the equip limit, and other aspects of the season in a forum post. "Seasons are where we experiment with new ideas and push Diablo 4 in new directions," Tanguay explained. "Not every idea lands exactly as intended, but we'll continue listening to your feedback, addressing what's not working, and applying those lessons to future seasonal updates."
The July 16 patch, officially version 3.1.1a, follows a July 14 update that had already increased the drop rates of Pandemonium Fragments, materials needed for the Mythic upgrade process, and reduced the quantity required. While these earlier changes allowed players to craft more Mythics, the equip limit still prevented them from utilizing multiple crafted items simultaneously unless they found rare, usable Mythics in the wild. The latest patch now allows players to equip multiple crafted Mythics.
Despite these adjustments, Blizzard is not completely reverting all Mythic-related changes. The game's original Mythic items, now termed Iconic Mythics, were notably nerfed as part of an overhaul called "Mythic Uniques 3.0" prior to Season 14. This new system allows any Unique item to potentially become a stronger Mythic version, either through finding it or crafting it. Blizzard has indicated that Mythics 3.0 is intended to be a permanent fixture in Diablo 4's endgame, with the changes aiming to support the game's long-term health by theoretically opening up more build diversity.
