Diablo 5 is set to launch with a greater number of classes than any previous game in the series, according to game director Joe Shely. Details shared during a BlizzCon 2026 panel confirmed this ambition, with Blizzard aiming for a roster of nine or ten playable classes at release.

Three classes have been revealed so far: the Monk, the Demon Hunter, and a new addition, the Plague Knight. Shely elaborated on the team's approach to class design, emphasizing that a larger roster allows for both familiar and novel player experiences. He noted that a returning class like the Demon Hunter will offer a fresh take while retaining recognizable elements, such as its signature twin crossbows. This approach aims to satisfy player nostalgia while introducing new mechanics and playstyles.

The increased class count also provides opportunities to explore entirely new concepts, exemplified by the announced Plague Knight. Shely stated that this expanded selection is a first for the Diablo franchise.

Blizzard also confirmed that Diablo 4 will not receive further expansions. However, the game will continue to support seasonal content. The upcoming "Season of Hell's Legacy," scheduled to launch on September 15, will feature the return of Deckard Cain, who will task players with confronting echoes of the Prime Evils, including Diablo himself.
