Blizzard used its BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony to unveil Doctrine, the next hero joining the Overwatch roster. This new character is a support hero with a vampiric theme, and developers indicated that Doctrine will possess a high mechanical skill ceiling. Doctrine's abilities will allow players to both heal allies and damage enemies simultaneously.
Players attending BlizzCon can try Doctrine in-game, and a limited-time hero trial will be available for those playing at home, coinciding with the character's arrival shortly before the Halloween season. The Overwatch cinematic shown at the event focused on Doomfist's efforts to maintain control of Talon following a near-fatal incident. This narrative involves agents like Sombra working to free Doctrine, who then rejoins the fight alongside his Talon sect.
Season 5 of Overwatch is set to introduce significant content updates. Beyond the new hero and the return of Dokiwatch cosmetics, players will gain the ability to earn rewards from past battle passes. A new map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, will also be added. This location is an Icelandic prison that will feature in Escort game modes.
The Dokiwatch cosmetic event, popular with fans of anime and manga, will return during the next season. Further details are expected to be shared during an upcoming Overwatch BlizzCon panel. While no new Overwatch game titles were announced at this year's convention, the franchise remains active with the additions to Season 5, the ongoing Overwatch World Cup, and a live play session called QuestWatch scheduled for the following day.
Overwatch is currently available as a free-to-play title on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
