Following a period of significant change after its divestment from Microsoft, Psychonauts developer Double Fine Productions has announced its next initiative: a Kickstarter campaign for a new iteration of its game jam series, Amnesia Fortnight. Company CEO Tim Schafer revealed the plans on the Kinda Funny podcast.

The "Amnesia Fortnight 2026 - Indie Reboot: A Double Fine Productions Game Jam, Documentary and Kickstarter Campaign" is scheduled to commence on August 31 and will run through September. Backers of the campaign will have the opportunity to select game ideas for the development of four new prototypes. Subsequently, these backers will vote on which of these prototypes will be developed into a "real (small) game." Production will be documented by 2 Player Productions, a studio that previously collaborated with Double Fine on the "Psychodyssey" documentary.

Double Fine has a history with its game jams, having first streamed the event in 2012 and continuing in 2014, 2017, and 2019. Prototypes from these sessions have been made available on Humble in the past. Several Double Fine titles, including Costume Quest, Spacebase DK-9, and Headlander, trace their origins to these game jams, while elements of games like the Compton’s Cookout level in Psychonauts 2 were also inspired by the jam concepts.

Last month, Double Fine found itself independent from Microsoft amid a wave of layoffs and divestments within Xbox. This transition led to the studio laying off 23 of its approximately 90 employees. Tim Schafer stated at the time that "only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action."

Since its founding in 2000, Double Fine has released a notable catalog of games, such as both Psychonauts titles and Brutal Legend. Prior to its acquisition by Xbox Game Studios in 2019, the studio played a role in popularizing crowdfunding within the video game industry through successful Kickstarter campaigns for Broken Age and Psychonauts 2.
