Double Fine has revealed an ambitious stretch goal for its ongoing Kickstarter campaign, stating it will develop a sequel to the 2009 action-strategy game Brütal Legend if fans can collectively pledge $100 million. This announcement comes as the studio operates independently following its recent separation from Xbox.
The original Brütal Legend, released in 2009, blended action combat with real-time strategy elements and featured a star-studded voice cast including Jack Black, Rob Halford, Lita Ford, Ozzy Osbourne, and Tim Curry. The game's development and publishing saw notable disputes between Electronic Arts, Double Fine, and Activision Blizzard, before eventually being released to critical acclaim.
Double Fine's current Kickstarter aims to raise $400,000 to fund a variety of game jam projects, with the Brütal Legend 2 goal listed among its stretch objectives. As of the report, the campaign has garnered over $290,000 with 29 days remaining. The $100 million target for the sequel is presented as a significant challenge, requiring widespread community support to reach what would be a record-breaking Kickstarter achievement. Even if the $100 million goal is not met, the campaign offers the potential for other projects developed by Double Fine to move forward.
