Capcom has announced that Kento Kinoshita will direct the upcoming expansion for Dragon's Dogma 2, subtitled Dark Arisen. Kinoshita previously helmed the 2013 release of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, the expanded version of the original game that solidified its cult classic status. The announcement came during the June 25 Spotlight showcase.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen was revealed just weeks prior during the June 2026 Nintendo Direct. This expansion will build upon the 2024 base game by introducing quality-of-life improvements and new content. A significant addition is Norgan, a new snowy region featuring an original story and unique enemies. The expansion will also include the Relic Expedition, a system that allows players to craft new weapons and armor with customizable class skills, enhancing player build diversity. Furthermore, twelve new dungeons, known as Last Rites, will be added to the game's existing map for players to challenge.

While much of the presented information at the Spotlight showcase reiterated previous announcements, the surprise came with the confirmation of Kinoshita's return as director. The original Dragon's Dogma and Dragon's Dogma 2 were both directed by Hideaki Itsuno, a legendary Capcom director known for his work on the Devil May Cry series. Itsuno departed Capcom in September 2024 after more than three decades with the company. He later joined LightSpeed Studios, a Tencent subsidiary, to lead a new Japan-based development team.

Kinoshita's prior directorial work includes the original Dark Arisen expansion and the now-defunct MMO Dragon's Dogma Online. The original Dark Arisen was instrumental in refining the base game's mechanics and introducing a vast new area, significantly boosting the game's popularity. His reappointment for Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen suggests Capcom is entrusting the expansion's development to a seasoned figure familiar with the series' evolution.

During his brief address, Kinoshita offered cryptic hints about the expansion's narrative, mentioning the Fallen Dragon as the presumed antagonist and Eir, a woman also pursuing the dragon, as a key character. Further story details were not disclosed.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is scheduled for release on October 9. In preparation, Capcom is releasing free updates for the base game. A June 10 update introduced the Eternal Ferrystone, an item designed to facilitate faster world traversal. Future updates are planned to remove certain microtransactions and increase the number of available save slots in anticipation of the Dark Arisen expansion.
