Capcom is rolling out free updates for Dragon's Dogma 2, with a new expansion, Dark Arisen, set to release later this year. These updates aim to address player feedback regarding the game's challenging pace and performance, though developers emphasize they are adding options rather than removing core design elements.
Addressing Fast Travel and Friction
The most recent update introduced the Eternal Ferrystone, an item that allows for unlimited fast travel. Producer Naoto Oyama stated that this addition provides an option for players who prefer a more casual experience, assuring that the goal is not to compromise the original game's enjoyment. Game Director Kento Kinoshita elaborated that this provides flexibility, allowing players to choose between the strategic pace of traveling on foot or the convenience of fast travel when fatigue sets in. "Exploring on foot – that is still an enjoyable option," Kinoshita said. "But doing that multiple times, maybe some people might get fatigued, and they'll be like, 'Hey, I want to just do fast travel,' and then we have that Ferrystone. So, it's just as an option."
Clarifying the Dragonsplague System
Upcoming changes in an August update will focus on the Dragonsplague system. Kinoshita explained that these adjustments will not reduce the negative impacts of the disease but will make its benefits more apparent. "We're not easing the penalty here," he stated. "Dragonsplague will happen at the same rate." The developers intend to make it clearer to players when their pawns are afflicted and how the affliction enhances their abilities. "We made that Dragonsplague system more clear," Kinoshita added. "Even in the base game, before the title updates, the afflicted pawn got stronger, but it wasn't clear that they got stronger. But by the title updates, it will be more clearly reflected to the stats, so people will able to notice that the Dragonsplague is making their pawns stronger. So they can enjoy the risk/reward dynamics there in a clearer way."
While Capcom maintains that penalties are not being eased, details for the August update indicate that Dragonsplague will become curable with a new item. Afflicted pawns will also receive buffs, such as increased effectiveness against large enemies and sustained combat against smaller foes without stamina drain.
Future Updates and Expansion
The first major update for Dragon's Dogma 2 was released on June 10. The subsequent update, scheduled for late August, will refine the Dragonsplague system, introduce additional weapon skill slots, and implement further performance improvements. The Dark Arisen expansion is slated for release on October 9 and will also be available on the Nintendo Switch 2.
