Capcom producers Naoto Oyama and Kenta Kinoshita have addressed player concerns surrounding Dragon's Dogma 2, detailing efforts to improve the game and outlining their approach to the upcoming Dark Arisen DLC. The developers expressed a commitment to regaining the trust of fans who were disappointed by the initial launch, particularly regarding technical performance and monetization practices.

"We are trying our best to win back trust from those players who felt [disappointed] in with the launch of Dragon's Dogma 2," Oyama stated in an interview with Eurogamer. He noted that a June title update, which removed several microtransactions previously locked behind a paywall—such as fast travel options and character editing—received positive feedback. However, Oyama acknowledged that some players remain cautious, awaiting an August patch that promises further performance improvements and solutions for the controversial 'Dragonsplague' mechanic.

This upcoming August update is set to tackle more significant performance issues and introduce a cure for the in-game Dragonsplague ailment, alongside various other quality-of-life adjustments. "I'm really hopeful that once they see the performance improvements we've made in August and what we're doing to build towards the expansion release that players, hopefully, feel that the base Dragon's Dogma 2 game is in a good state so that they can jump back into the expansion," Oyama added.

The developers also discussed how recent updates have addressed elements that contributed to the game's unique identity. Initially, the scarcity of resources like portcrystals, which limited fast travel options to around six per playthrough, was a point of contention. While some players welcomed the removal of paywalled conveniences, others felt it diluted the hardcore nature that defines the Dragon's Dogma series. Director Kenta Kinoshita emphasized the importance of maintaining this challenging aspect.

"I think there's a lot of strategizing that was made possible by the original game design of Dragon's Dogma," Kinoshita reflected. "It's got a certain 'hardcore nature' where the game design forces you to think about things you might not think about in every game, or even every open-world RPG."

To balance this hardcore design with player expectations and modern gaming conveniences, Capcom introduced the Eternal Ferrystone in the June patch. This item allows for unlimited fast travel, a feature that was also well-received in the original Dragon's Dogma. Kinoshita clarified the team's philosophy: "I feel that we're not forcing anyone to fast travel anywhere; we're just giving those who wish to take that option an alternative." He believes this approach respects player choice, acknowledging that some may prefer the more immersive, slower pace of overland travel or riskier journeys via ox cart, while offering a third, more convenient option for those facing time constraints.

"It's just you now have a third option. That's the best way to implement quality-of-life improvements: don't impinge on the original experience, but just give the player more possibilities, if possible," Kinoshita explained. These careful adjustments aim to enhance fluidity and intuitiveness without compromising the core challenge of Dragon's Dogma 2. Significant changes are also planned for the AI companions, known as Pawns, in the Dark Arisen DLC, which is slated for release on October 9th.
