The popular animated fantasy sports series Dragon Striker is set to return for a second season in early 2027, Disney announced during the 2026 Anime Expo. The new season will be available on both Disney Plus and Disney XD. This announcement comes as a welcome surprise for fans of the series, which premiered on Disney Plus in June and has garnered significant praise for its animation and storytelling.
Dragon Striker, produced by Paris-based Chouette Studios, blends Eastern and Western animation styles with a coming-of-age fantasy narrative. The series has been compared to a mix of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Harry Potter, and My Hero Academia, all centered around a magical sport called gorotama, which closely resembles soccer. The show's creators, who founded Chouette Studios with aspirations of creating Japanese-style animation, have infused every frame with a distinct passion that has resonated with critics and viewers alike.
The story follows Key Nagatatsu, a young farm boy with dreams of attending Kal Asterock academy. There, students compete in gorotama, a sport that Key's mother once dominated. After Key accidentally awakens the legendary Dragon tama, he joins a team called the Knights. What begins as an underdog sports tale gradually unfolds into a larger narrative involving ancient conspiracies and family secrets.
Season 2 is set to delve deeper into the Knights' journey as they face broken friendships, uncover buried secrets, and confront an ancient evil in their quest to reach the Banner's Helm final. The returning cast includes Akshay Kumar, Rebecca LaChance, Yeukayi Ushe, Waylon Jacobs, and Evanna Lynch, with composer Kevin Penkin also back to provide the score. The hope is that a more prominent spotlight for the second season will allow Dragon Striker to build a larger audience and achieve widespread recognition.
