Authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, architects of the beloved Dragonlance setting, are set to release a new novel titled Dragonlance: War Wizard on August 4, 2026, published by Random House Worlds. This marks the first entry in a new trilogy that delves into the formative years and burgeoning friendship of legendary heroes Huma Dragonbane and Magius.

The novel revisits the world of Krynn, the setting originally conceived by Weis and Hickman for the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing game, which later expanded into a successful literary series beginning with 1984's Dragons of Autumn Twilight. War Wizard is described as an exploration of the origins of Dragonlance's enduring appeal, featuring elements of dragons, orcs, magic, and conflict.

This new release coincides with a renewed interest in the Dragonlance setting. Weis and Hickman have recently rekindled their collaboration with Wizards of the Coast on undisclosed Dragonlance projects, working alongside actor and Dungeon Master Joe Manganiello.

An excerpt from Dragonlance: War Wizard details an encounter with ogres, showcasing the early bond between Huma, Magius, and Greta. The passage depicts the trio preparing for an attack, with Magius facing internal conflict and external pressure regarding his magical abilities and defiance of established authorities. The scene culminates in an ogre assault, where Magius utilizes his magic to defend himself and his companions, with Huma and Greta engaging in close combat.
