Wizards of the Coast used its Gen Con presentation to unveil a comprehensive roadmap for Dungeons & Dragons, detailing a structured, seasonal approach to content releases through 2027. This strategy, likened to live-service video games, will introduce significant crossovers with popular franchises like World of Warcraft and Star Wars, alongside a revamped Psion class.
Season of Magic (July – September 2026)
The year begins with the "Season of Magic," launching with two Arcana Unleashed books on September 15. The core gameplay expansion includes eight new subclasses, 33 spells, 10 backgrounds, 29 feats, and 47 magic items. This season also features a short adventure for first-level characters and Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, a "magical espionage campaign" designed for characters from level 11 to 20, pitting them against Szass Tam, the lich lord of Thay.
Dungeons & Dragons is also enhancing its digital platform with a new game-finding feature on D&D Beyond, accessible at dndbeyond.com/lfg. This tool will help players locate in-person games, connect with online Dungeon Masters through a partnership with startplaying.games offering a discounted first session for 99 cents, and facilitate player connections via Discord.
Season of Champions (October – December 2026)
The "Season of Champions" is highlighted by the ambitious Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft crossover, set to launch on November 17. This collaboration allows players to create characters representing any World of Warcraft race and class combination, featuring 11 new species and 9 subclasses. The content will include seven World of Warcraft dungeons, over 30 boss stat blocks, more than 60 new spells, over 50 new monsters, and mechanics for professions, mounts, and factions. Accompanying the release will be a new DM screen, Icecrown Citadel maps with an adventure, and two packs of miniatures. This product suite is available for pre-order, with early access for D&D Beyond Master Tier subscribers or purchasers from local game stores two weeks prior to the official launch.
This World of Warcraft collaboration marks the first expansion under the new "Universes Beyond" initiative, which aims to integrate D&D mechanics with established fictional universes.
Season of Survival (February – July 2027)
Launching 2027, the "Season of Survival" brings back the Dark Sun setting. Set in the harsh world of Athas, this release carries mature themes and graphic content, including an optional decapitation mechanic. Due to its mature nature, it will include a content warning and be shrink-wrapped in stores. The season will reintroduce the Psion class, previously tested in Unearthed Arcana, through two core books: Dark Sun: Edge of Oblivion, a setting expansion, and Dark Sun: Blood and Power, a gameplay expansion. A map pack, a Dark Sun DM Screen, and a limited edition Player's Handbook with custom cover art will also be available.
Season of Sword & Sorcery (September – October 2027)
The "Season of Sword & Sorcery" will revisit one of D&D's earliest campaign settings with Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen. This 160-page hardcover focuses on the villain Drelzna, daughter of Iggwilv, and is scheduled for release in late 2027. A Greyhawk DM screen and map pack will accompany the book.
Other Announcements
Beyond the seasonal structure, Wizards of the Coast announced "D&D Icons," a new collaboration program bringing renowned creators to work on D&D content. Joe Manganiello will serve as chief creative officer, with initial collaborations planned with Luke Gygax for Greyhawk, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for Dragonlance, and R. A. Salvatore for The Legend of Drizzt materials.
An overhaul of the D&D Beyond app is slated for 2027, aiming to improve its usability as a mobile companion for both online and in-person play. Developers plan to incorporate player feedback to refine the experience.
Details were also shared regarding Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, a third-person action-adventure game. Tasha the Witch Queen will serve as the patron, voiced by Maggie Robertson. The first gameplay reveal is expected at Gamescom.
Additionally, D&D will partner with third-party publishers for regular releases in existing settings. Ghostfire Gaming will produce a Ravenloft adventure next year, Visionary Productions is developing an Eberron adventure for 2028, and Kobold Press is creating content for the Forgotten Realms.
Finally, Wizards of the Coast teased an upcoming "Season of Rebellion" related to a Star Wars crossover, though specific details remain scarce.
