Dwarf Fortress co-creator Tarn Adams has described his current life as a millionaire as being "basically like reattaining what my parents could do with regular jobs." With the simulation game having sold over 800,000 copies by 2024 and surpassing one million sales by 2025, Adams and his brother Zach achieved financial security, a state Adams views not as a radical departure, but as a return to a past standard of living. He acknowledged the value of financial security, stating, "I wish it for everybody."
Adams noted that he now lives in a house and cares for two cats, adding that these comforts are familiar because he grew up in a similar environment. This perspective emerged in an interview with Joshua Wolens at Gamescom, where Adams reflected on his life since the game's commercial success.
Despite the financial windfall, development on Dwarf Fortress remains a primary focus. "We're back to work," Adams stated, indicating that the game's progression is largely unaffected by their newfound wealth. The team is reportedly preparing the game's first Myth and Magic update, which aims to introduce comprehensive magic systems. These systems are intended to go beyond simple spell combinations, delving into the fundamental cosmology of the game's universe.
This approach to development and personal finance echoes Adams' earlier comments regarding in-game societal structures. He had previously suggested that the game's mechanics, such as walling up dwarf nobles and abolishing dwarf police, might offer "a lesson to be had there," implying a potential parallel between in-game design choices and broader societal concepts. The continued, focused development of Dwarf Fortress suggests that its creators are applying a similar principled approach to both their work and their personal circumstances.
