A new project, dubbed OpenMW-Web, allows players to experience The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind directly within their web browser. Developer Virtastic released the initial 1.0 version of the project on GitHub, which is based on OpenMW, an ongoing open-source reimagining of the game.
A demonstration of the browser build is available, placing users in a small town environment with NPCs and a few enemies. This offers a glimpse into the feasibility of running Morrowind in a browser, showcasing surprisingly smooth performance. As is characteristic of the Elder Scrolls series, the demo allows for emergent gameplay even with minimal direction.
To access the full Morrowind experience, players must own a PC copy of the game. The OpenMW-Web project can utilize locally installed game files, enabling players to engage with the entire game and its mods through their browser. While this might seem counterintuitive to some, it presents a novel way to interact with the 2002 RPG.
The Morrowind community remains active in creating innovative ways to play the game. Recent contributions include a mod that adds dual-screen support for handheld devices, designed to emulate the Nintendo DS, and another that alters the gameplay to resemble Final Fantasy 11. Separately, the Skywind project continues its long-term effort to recreate Morrowind within the engine of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Given Bethesda's recent release of a remaster for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, a modern remake of Morrowind remains a possibility for the future.
