Actor Ethan Hawke has revealed that he and director Scott Derrickson are currently collaborating on a new project, fueling anticipation among horror fans. The pair have previously worked together on the successful horror films "Sinister" and "The Black Phone."
In a recent interview, when asked about his interest in making more horror movies, Hawke responded affirmatively, stating, “Yeah, Scott and I are working on something right now. I think he's so gifted. I like working with him.” While Hawke did not disclose specific details about the nature of their new collaboration, his comments have ignited speculation about whether the duo is planning a return to one of their established horror franchises or developing an entirely new concept.
The most immediate possibility is a third installment in "The Black Phone" series. The most recent film, "Black Phone 2," saw Hawke reprise his role as the supernatural villain The Grabber and was met with a positive critical reception. The franchise's mythology was expanded in the sequel, suggesting further narrative possibilities beyond the original storyline.
However, concrete plans for "Black Phone 3" remain unconfirmed. Both Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill expressed uncertainty about a third film during the promotion of "Black Phone 2," indicating that a compelling concept would be necessary to justify a return to the characters. Derrickson previously told Polygon that no discussions about a third movie had taken place.
Another potential avenue for collaboration is a return to "Sinister." This 2012 film marked Hawke and Derrickson's first horror partnership, with Hawke playing a true-crime writer. Although Hawke did not feature in the sequel, "Sinister 2," the original film laid the groundwork for a potential revisiting of its narrative.
Alternatively, Hawke and Derrickson may be embarking on a completely original horror story. For now, details surrounding their next venture are scarce, and fans must await further announcements.
Hawke's next film, "The Weight," a thriller set during the Depression era, is scheduled for release in theaters on September 18.
