In Archetype Entertainment's upcoming space opera RPG, Exodus, players will have the freedom to pursue romantic relationships with characters without restrictions based on their protagonist's gender. Narrative director Drew Karpyshyn confirmed that all romance options will be available to both male and female versions of the lead character, Jun Aslan.
"First of all, the player drives the romances and they are not gender-locked," Karpyshyn stated. He further explained that the system is designed to allow players to initiate relationships and potentially pursue multiple characters, adding that these interactions can be complex and do not always succeed. The narrative director emphasized that these relationships are intended to be a role-playing element rather than a direct gameplay mechanic.
Karpyshyn also noted that the choice between playing as a male or female Jun will not significantly alter how other characters perceive the protagonist, aiming to ensure that player choices are driven by personal preference rather than gameplay advantage.
Exodus is slated for release on April 7, 2027, and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game director, Chris King, described the game's romantic scenes as tasteful, though explicit enough to be clear. This approach to romance options follows trends seen in other contemporary RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and earlier titles in the Mass Effect series.
