Behaviour Interactive, known for the asymmetrical horror title Dead by Daylight, is venturing into a different genre with its upcoming game, Exterminauts. This three-player cooperative PvE extraction shooter tasks players with completing objectives in alien environments, reminiscent of titles like Helldivers but with a distinct visual style and gameplay approach. Players embody "blue collar workers" who must "punch in, clear up, and get out" of hazardous zones.
During hands-on demonstrations, Exterminauts was noted for its brighter, more lighthearted aesthetic compared to some of its contemporaries. The gameplay emphasizes chaotic cooperation, where friendly fire is a constant consideration, alongside threats from alien creatures seeking Polymorphic Plasma. This dynamic means players must not only contend with environmental hazards and enemies but also with the unpredictable actions of their teammates.
Unique gameplay mechanics contribute to the game's chaotic charm. Ziplines, for example, can only be used by one player at a time, and attempting to share one results in a comical fall. Weapons can be overcharged for increased damage or special effects, but this carries the risk of accidental friendly fire, such as electrifying a body of water the entire team is standing in. These elements create emergent, often humorous, situations.
The core loop involves entering a mission, completing a series of tasks, and extracting. A typical contract, featuring multiple objectives, lasted approximately 25 minutes, suggesting a focus on engaging, shorter play sessions. The developers indicated that a variety of contracts will be available, aiming to provide sufficient variety to maintain player engagement. Furthermore, mods and variants of weapons and equipment will be discoverable during runs, encouraging players to experiment with different builds and pursue the "just one more run" mentality.
While Exterminauts may not introduce revolutionary concepts to the extraction shooter genre, its appeal lies in its accessible yet chaotic co-op gameplay, vibrant presentation, and the potential for unpredictable, fun experiences. The game is slated for release in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
