EA Sports is launching a significant new social hub in FC 27 called The Grounds, which line producer Karthik Venkateshan described as "perhaps one of our biggest reinventions in recent history." The mode is designed to immerse players in football culture both on and off the pitch, integrating existing game modes with new street-focused experiences.
The Grounds is structured into three distinct districts, each inspired by real-world locations: Montclair, modeled after Parisian streets; Zeiza, reflecting Buenos Aires; and Parkside, reimagining suburban Britain. Game design director Jean-Francois Guastalla emphasized the importance of authenticity in these areas, aiming to capture the essence of local football communities.
While Parkside incorporates elements that evoke a friendly, almost Ted Lasso-esque atmosphere with elements like a housing estate and a large Alan Shearer mural, developers have opted for an idyllic lens. This approach includes charming details such as a cafe named Nutmeg and various interactable icons that provide historical context about players or cultural landmarks, offering a learning opportunity for more casual fans.
The overall layout of The Grounds has been likened to a theme park, with different game modes presented as attractions within each district. The central area, The Terrace, serves as a social hub where up to 100 players can gather before accessing their customized clubhouses or venturing into the in-game streets for football action. The architecture of the buildings cleverly reflects the game modes they house, with a traditional red-brick stadium for 11v11 matches and a modern metallic structure for the faster-paced Rush mode.
At launch, The Grounds will feature four small-sided world-based experiences: 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, and standard 5v5 Rush. In addition to these, four casual, party-game-style "Kickabouts" will be available, with more promised throughout the year. These include Goal Control, where players aim to score in multiple goals to gain territorial control; The Big Race, an obstacle course focused on dribbling; Bucket Ball, a 2v2 mode combining football and basketball elements; and Balloon Ball, a dodgeball-inspired game where players pop balloons on opponents.
Beyond structured modes, players can engage with "Drop Kick Targets" scattered throughout the world, offering scoring opportunities in various environmental settings. The game also incorporates narrative-driven moments featuring world-famous football stars like Kylian Mbappe, Paulo Dybala, and Chloe Kelly, alongside former FIFA character Alex Hunter. These mentors guide players through The Grounds, offering challenges inspired by their own careers and helping new players progress.
Progression in The Grounds involves mastering archetypes and completing challenges to earn permanent stat boosts and cosmetics. The system allows for free respecs of acquired skills. A new consumable item called "Amps" offers temporary boosts to player abilities, with standard and signature variants available. Signature Amps, based on real-world players, can provide significant attribute increases, perks, and playstyles for a limited number of matches. Amps are earned through various in-game activities but can also be purchased. The in-game store will also offer a wide range of cosmetic items, including streetwear, replica team shirts, and branded apparel from major sportswear companies.
The Grounds will evolve throughout the year with 10 planned seasonal updates. These seasons will refresh the open world with themed content, such as "European Nights" focusing on the Champions League, a Halloween-themed "Screaming Grounds," a "Thunder Struck" event potentially tied to Black Friday, "Frozen Grounds" with a winter theme, and a January update celebrating the "Team of the Year" selections. These updates aim to keep the environment feeling fresh with themed objectives and rewards.
While The Grounds introduces multiple modes, new progression systems, and narrative elements, its long-term appeal remains to be seen. EA Sports hopes it can recapture the sustained engagement seen with Ultimate Team, offering a fresh experience compared to modes like Volta, which had limited staying power. Whether The Grounds becomes a staple of the FC series or follows other social spaces into obscurity, like PlayStation Home, will depend on its success in retaining player interest over time.
