Combat in Fields of Mistria is primarily focused within The Mines, an area that offers more than just enemy encounters. While mining is a core activity, defeating monsters provides unique resource drops crucial for game progression and crafting.
Players are advised to preserve monster-specific resources, especially early on, as they are often required to advance further into The Mines. Hunting for specific enemies later in the game can be a tedious process. Each biome within The Mines features a distinct roster of creatures, and understanding their combat strategies is key to efficient resource gathering.
Upper Mines
In the Upper Mines, players will encounter Saplings, Rock Clods, and Mushrooms. Saplings can be dazed after they jump, allowing for hits. Rock Clods and Copper Ore Clods can have their projectiles reflected back at them. Red Mushrooms become vulnerable and move only when players turn their backs, making them susceptible to jump attacks. Yellow Enchanters should be avoided while powering up, but can be attacked after discharging their energy. Mimics, a recurring enemy, reward players with Tesserae, Rubies, and Mimic Hats when fed an item into their mouths before they attack. Deeper Mimics yield better rewards.
Tide Caverns
The Tide Caverns introduce Blue Saplings, Blue Rock Clods, and Green Mushrooms, which share similar combat mechanics with their Upper Mines counterparts. Iron Rock Clods also require projectile reflection. Blue Stalagmites can be outmaneuvered by luring them, pausing, and then attacking when they pop up. Purple Essence Bats can be damaged by reflecting their soundwaves or direct attacks. Mimics in this area drop Tesserae, Sapphires, and Mimic Hats.
Deep Earth
Within the Deep Earth biome, players will face Purple Saplings, Green Rock Clods, and Blue Mushrooms. Silver enemies can be defeated by reflecting projectiles. Green Stalagmites require a similar strategy to Blue Stalagmites. Blue Essence Bats can be countered by reflecting their soundwaves or attacking their bodies. Mimics found here drop Tesserae, Emeralds, and Mimic Hats.
Lava Caves
The Lava Caves present challenges such as Orange Saplings, Red Rock Clods, and Purple Mushrooms. Gold Ore Clods, like other Rock Clods, are vulnerable to reflected projectiles. Purple Stalagmites can be defeated using the chase-and-attack strategy. Orange Flame Spirits are dangerous due to teleportation and flaming projectiles; they should be attacked immediately upon sighting. Lava Cats move rapidly but have vulnerable cooldown periods, making jump attacks effective. These can also be doused with a watering can. Mimics in the Lava Caves yield Tesserae and Diamonds.
Ancient Ruins
The Ancient Ruins are home to Pink Saplings, Purple Flame Spirits, and Void Cats. Pink Saplings require two hits to break their masks before damage can be dealt. Purple Flame Spirits and Void Cats share combat strategies with their counterparts in other biomes. Flying Tomes can be attacked while charging their rush attack. Rock Stacks can be avoided by watching their shadows and then attacked when dazed. The Living Gryphon Statue is noted as the toughest monster in the game but can be overcome with consistent jump attacks and by avoiding its rushes. Mimics in the Ancient Ruins drop Tesserae and can yield a Mimic Hat.
