Kofi “Koustics” Miller, a prominent figure in the fighting game community, was involved in subduing an armed individual at the OS NYC gaming lounge on June 18. The incident began when a man, reportedly playing Apex Legends, became agitated and started harassing staff.
According to reports, the situation escalated when the man brandished a knife. Miller, who was streaming a League of Legends match at the time, overheard the commotion and stepped away from his game to assist. He helped escort the man out of the building, but the individual attempted to re-enter with the weapon still in hand. Miller then tackled the man, subdued him with a chokehold, and held him until law enforcement arrived. The attacker sustained an injury from his own knife during the altercation, but Miller stated that no one else was harmed.
Miller recounted the events on stream, noting that the disruption interrupted his ranked match. Another player present, professional League of Legends competitor Gil “Shogo” Meron, confirmed that the assailant's frustration with Apex Legends appeared to be the catalyst for the incident. Miller later commented that players should consider stepping away from games if they cause significant distress, suggesting less stressful alternatives.
Miller credited his background in sumo wrestling with helping him remain calm and effectively manage the dangerous situation. He emphasized that the priority was ensuring everyone's safety, and that the outcome, while serious, could have been far worse. Beyond his involvement in the fighting game community, where he is known for commentary at major tournaments like EVO and CEO, Miller also works as an educator, teaching coding, robotics, and gaming to students in the Bronx.
