Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 7 are set to collide for the first time in an upcoming eight-player raid titled "Beyond the Lifestream," Square Enix announced. This significant collaboration was revealed by Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida and Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi during Berlin Fan Fest. The raid will be the first part of the Evercold expansion's new raid tier and is scheduled to launch in patch 8.01, shortly after Evercold's release in January 2027.

"Beyond the Lifestream" will feature three tiers of content and introduce a new difficulty setting, positioned between normal and savage modes. The narrative for this crossover is being co-written by Motomu Toriyama, known for his work on Final Fantasy 13 and as scenario design director for the FF7 Remake series, and the Final Fantasy 14 scenario team. Kazushige Nojima, a key writer for numerous Final Fantasy titles including the original Final Fantasy 7 and FF7 Rebirth, will serve as the story's supervisor. Tetsuya Nomura is overseeing art direction, aiming to infuse the raid's monsters and bosses with the distinct "Final Fantasy 7 feel."

While Hamaguchi remained guarded about specific story details, he confirmed that a substantial number of Final Fantasy 7 characters will appear throughout the raid series. This cross-universe collaboration continues Final Fantasy 14's trend of integrating content from other beloved franchises. Previous major collaborations include the Ivalice raid series, tied to Final Fantasy 12, and a series connected to NieR: Automata. The recent Dawntrail expansion also featured a crossover with Final Fantasy 11, and Evercold's 24-player raid will collaborate with Evangelion.

In addition to the raid, Square Enix is adding new content to Final Fantasy 14's Gold Saucer, inspired by Final Fantasy 7. Starting October 28, a new activity called "Keybound Brawler" will be available. This typing game can be played with up to three other players. Yoshida indicated that the Gold Saucer's format is adaptable, allowing for future themes from other collaborations, such as a teased Dragon Quest crossover, or even quiz and trivia battles. The initial reward set for Keybound Brawler includes glamour outfits for Barret and Tifa, with Barret's costume featuring his iconic Gatling gun arm as an optional fashion accessory.

Final Fantasy 14's Evercold expansion is slated for release in January 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The "Beyond the Lifestream" raid will be a significant draw for fans of both Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 7, offering a novel experience that bridges the worlds of these two critically acclaimed series.
