Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi has indicated that the upcoming title will bring a definitive end to the main story of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy. While the narrative arc will be concluded within the game itself, Hamaguchi also mentioned the possibility of future downloadable content that could explore untold stories of specific characters. This approach mirrors the previously released Yuffie-focused DLC, Episode Intermission, for Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

During an interview with Automaton, Hamaguchi acknowledged the significant expectations from both the media and fans regarding potential DLC. "I feel that, at this point, both the media and the fan community are expecting a DLC to come," he stated. "Plus, I sense immense expectations for the FF7 franchise, or rather, it feels like fans don’t want it to end yet." However, he clarified that no concrete plans for DLC have been solidified. "Things haven’t crystallized yet, so we can’t certainly say 'Okay, we’re going to make DLC for FF7 Rebirth.' However, if we get the support from fans, and if there’s genuine demand for it, I think we’d want to consider it."

Square Enix is committed to concluding the overarching story in Rebirth. "The story will be concluded within the main game. We’re serious about concluding the series with FF7 Rebirth, and we’re proceeding with development with that goal in mind," Hamaguchi emphasized. Any post-launch content, should it materialize, would function as a narrative expansion rather than a continuation of the main plot, focusing on individual character arcs.

Regarding the recent shutdown of Ever Crisis, Hamaguchi suggested that the team will be closely monitoring player reactions and reviews following Rebirth's launch. "Once the game is out, we’ll be observing everyone’s reactions and reviews. So, if there is a significant demand, and if we, as creators, are able to come up with a fresh and compelling answer to that, we might consider doing something else down the line," he explained. For now, the development team's sole focus remains on completing the game, with a planned release in spring 2027. The director also noted that "thinking too far ahead is definitely not a good thing for FF7 Rebirth, so we’re solely focused on finishing up its development for the time being."
