Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that his team became overly enthusiastic about the upcoming Final Fantasy 14 crossover content, necessitating a call for moderation. Hamaguchi stated that his team needed to be reminded to "be reasonable" and assess their bandwidth to ensure realistic goals. This directive was shared with Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki Yoshida, who also advised his team to "calm down."
The need for this tempered approach stems from the desire to avoid impacting the Final Fantasy 14 patch release schedule. Hamaguchi explained, "[We] have to be really careful that it's not impacting the FF14 patch release schedule, because then that would be putting the cart before the horse."
Final Fantasy 14 has a history of incorporating crossover events, including seasonal events with Final Fantasy 15 and the Omega raid series in Stormblood, which featured references to other Final Fantasy titles justified within its narrative as a computer simulation. However, the upcoming crossover involving Final Fantasy 7 is noted as the first to encompass both the 8-man raid series and the 24-man alliance raid series within the MMO. The latter will feature an Evangelion crossover, while the former will be the FF7-themed event.
Hamaguchi acknowledged that the development teams were eager to "come up with all these ideas," but stressed the importance of ensuring such ambitious plans align with current development capacity and do not compromise the quality or timely delivery of existing content. The decision reflects a broader understanding of development constraints, as seen in past projects where resource limitations have influenced content design. The director's focus on realistic planning aims to allow the teams to "do their best work" on both the crossover and the ongoing development of Final Fantasy 14.
