The development of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the third and final entry in the remake trilogy, is tentatively scheduled for spring 2027. While this release date precedes Sony's projected end date for physical PlayStation disc manufacturing by approximately one year, the availability of a physical version for Rebirth remains uncertain.

Square Enix has yet to make a definitive decision regarding a physical disc release for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. However, game director Naoki Hamaguchi has expressed his support for such an option. In an interview with GamesRadar+ at the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival in Berlin, Hamaguchi stated that he could not provide concrete details at this time.

"We're still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Rebirth," Hamaguchi explained. "So I can't say anything particularly definitive at this point in time. But I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition."

Should Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth forgo a physical release, it would follow a growing trend in the industry. Even prior to Sony's announcement about discontinuing physical media, Rockstar Games revealed that Grand Theft Auto 6 would not be released on a physical disc.

Should Rebirth include a physical version, questions arise about the number of discs required, following the precedent set by its predecessors. Both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth were released on multiple discs.

"Obviously, say, if you're talking to Nintendo, there's considerations about the storage limits on key cards and things like that, and then other platforms about how much you can put onto a disc," Hamaguchi elaborated. "These are the discussions that we're having at this point in time. I do hope that we'll be able to come up with something that is as close as possible as to what players and fans are going to want, but you'll have to look forward to future announcements for that."
