Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the concluding chapter of Square Enix's ambitious FF7 remake trilogy, is set to redefine the scope of open-world design by building directly upon the environments established in its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The game picks up in the aftermath of Rebirth's events, with Aerith's fate uncertain, Cid and Vincent Valentine joining the party, and the group embarking on a journey toward Wutai, now with the coveted airship, the Highwind, at their disposal.
The Highwind airship serves as a central mechanic for Revelation's vast scale. During a 45-minute preview session at Gamescom 2026, players were able to experience a seamless transition from air travel to on-foot exploration. Upon landing the airship in a region, players can disembark and descend to the planet's surface, a process described as a "jaw-dropping feat of game design" that allows for immediate access to all previously explored areas, including Mideel, the Grasslands, Junon, Gongaga, Costa del Sol, and the Gold Saucer. These familiar locations are rendered identically to their appearances in Rebirth, fostering a sense of a persistent, real place rather than a series of disconnected levels.
This reuse of environments is a significant departure from typical sequel design and contributes to a profound sense of worldbuilding. The immediate effect is the creation of a world that feels lived-in and continuous, a rare achievement in modern game development.
Beyond its expansive world, Revelation continues the established quality of the trilogy. The narrative balances dire stakes with humor, and the presentation remains luxurious, with detailed character models and environments. The combat system, a hybrid of real-time action and strategic menu-based commands, is expected to remain engaging. Notable additions aim to refresh this core gameplay loop.
One such addition is the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS) system, allowing players to switch between four distinct costumes mid-battle: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner. Each FITS outfit offers unique movesets and stat advantages, potentially enabling dynamic party composition adjustments during combat. While extensive experimentation was not possible within the preview's limited timeframe, the FITS system shows promise for high-level strategic play.
The new party members, Cid Highwind and Vincent Valentine, introduce distinct combat styles. Cid wields a staff with what was noted as ineffectual damage in the preview, while Vincent proves to be a formidable combatant. Vincent possesses the ability to transform into the Galian Beast, a powerful wolf-like creature capable of rapidly defeating enemies. The effectiveness of this transformation, even on high-level characters, suggests it could be a significant factor in battles.
Players will encounter various 'Weapons,' powerful kaiju-like creatures, scattered across Revelation's world. Upon entering a new region, an AI assistant named MAI will identify the location of a regional Weapon, which can then be tracked and fought. MAI also provides notifications for a wide array of other activities, including materia hunts, combat challenges, minigames, and side quests. Each region appears to feature its own dedicated side quest chain, such as those found at the Gold Saucer.
The preview also touched upon the highly anticipated return of Queen's Blood, the popular minigame from Rebirth. Revelation will feature an expanded version of Queen's Blood, though players will need to rebuild their decks from scratch. In Rebirth, Queen's Blood was tied to Cloud's story; in Revelation, it will be a Red XIII storyline.
Revelation aims to turn up the volume on all aspects of the FF7 experience. With more party members, enhanced customization, additional minigames, and a vastly expanded world, it seeks to evolve the standard set by the original Final Fantasy 7 in 1997. The game is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
