Final Fantasy 14 is set to receive a significant crossover event with Final Fantasy 7, featuring a 12-fight raid series spread across three tiers within the upcoming expansion, Evercold. The collaboration, which had been a long time coming, was made possible when the release schedules for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Evercold aligned.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi stated that he spoke with Final Fantasy 14 director and producer Naoki Yoshida about the proximity of their release dates. This convergence provided an opportunity to create an event that could invigorate the entire Final Fantasy franchise. However, details regarding the specific encounters within the raid series remain scarce, with Hamaguchi hinting at the team's efforts to make familiar Final Fantasy 7 bosses suitable for Final Fantasy 14's raid format.

"We're working with both teams to talk about lore and to make sure it's well established," Hamaguchi explained. He noted that Final Fantasy 14 raids often feature large-scale bosses. This presents a design challenge, as characters like Sephiroth, while iconic, are not typically depicted as massive in their original appearances. The development team is considering how such characters could be adapted to fit the scale and gameplay demands of Final Fantasy 14's raids, exploring how they might appear and function within these encounters.

Ensuring lore compatibility and fan reception is a key consideration. Original Final Fantasy 7 writer Kazushige Nojima is involved to maintain consistency and ensure that the crossover feels organic and believable to fans. Hamaguchi emphasized the importance of establishing in-game reasons for character appearances and modifications, aiming to avoid scenarios that might feel jarring or inauthentic to the established universes.

Creative Studio 3 and long-time Final Fantasy artist Tetsuya Nomura are also contributing to the raid series. Discussions have centered on how to adapt characters for raid boss encounters. Nomura's involvement is crucial in setting parameters for character representation, ensuring that any adaptations align with the established identity of the characters. For instance, the idea of a massively scaled-up Cloud Strife fighting players has been discussed, with the caveat that such a transformation would require a compelling in-game justification.

The development team is actively exploring creative solutions to integrate Final Fantasy 7 elements into Final Fantasy 14's raid structure in a way that respects both franchises' lore and appeals to their respective fan bases. The integration of these beloved characters and concepts into new, challenging encounters is anticipated with excitement by many.
