Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, a mobile and PC game that chronicled stories from the broader Final Fantasy VII universe, will be shut down on October 6th.
In a candid statement, game producer Shoichi Ichikawa explained that the decision stemmed from the challenge of aligning production expenses with the demand for character-specific weapons and gear. "It has become difficult to find a balance between production costs and the demand for character weapons and gear," Ichikawa stated.
Launched in 2023, Ever Crisis offered players a streamlined version of the original Final Fantasy VII's combat system. Beyond retelling the story of Cloud Strife and his companions, the game introduced new narratives, characters, and explored Sephiroth's origins. It also featured alternate universe storylines involving the Final Fantasy VII cast.
This is not the first time Square Enix has discontinued a Final Fantasy VII mobile title shortly after its release. The company previously launched Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, a battle royale game, in 2021, which ceased operations two years later.
Despite the impending shutdown, the Ever Crisis development team plans to release additional content in the game's final months. This includes re-running past events and introducing a concluding story chapter intended to provide a fitting send-off for the game.
