Square Enix has unveiled an extended 10-minute gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, confirming a global release date of April 8, 2027. The upcoming RPG will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
The trailer begins with an overview of the playable party members and a look at the game's refined combat system before revealing the release date. Director Naoki Hamaguchi then introduced further details, including how Cloud and his companions will utilize the Highwind airship to parachute into new and returning locations, a mechanic likened to Fortnite's deployment system. Upon landing, players can traverse the environment on a chocobo, which can also participate in combat, or engage enemies directly with character weapons.
Revelation introduces the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitware (FITS) system, serving as the game's Job system. This allows party members to adopt various classes, such as warrior or black mage. The FITS can be accessed and managed on the Highwind, which functions as the player's mobile base of operations. Players pilot the Highwind in real-time to reach new destinations, then descend via parachute.
The trailer offered a detailed look at Wutai, Yuffie's homeland, depicted as a fantastical interpretation of feudal Japan, with Yuffie's grapple gun facilitating navigation through its vertical architecture. While Rocket Town is mentioned as a new area, it was not shown. The game will also revisit Gongaga, an area previously featured in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Side quests in locations like Gongaga are designed to provide deeper insights into the world and the fates of other characters from the broader Final Fantasy VII universe. Notably, Revelation allows players to accelerate cutscenes by 2x, a feature intended for potential repeated playthroughs. The narrative of these side quests is dynamic, with character interactions and dialogue varying based on the player's active party member. For instance, Cissnei's reactions will differ when accompanying Vincent compared to Yuffie.
The popular Queen's Blood card game, a highlight of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will return in Revelation. In this installment, Red XIII takes center stage in the Queen's Blood narrative, facing powerful opponents that introduce unique challenges to the gameplay.
Director Naoki Hamaguchi concluded the presentation by encouraging players to complete Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth prior to Revelation's launch. The game is set to release on April 8, 2027.
