The final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy will be called Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a title director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed was chosen to best represent the game's narrative conclusion. Speculation about the third installment's name was rampant following the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, with "Reunion" being a popular fan theory. However, that title was previously used for the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII remaster.
Speaking at Summer Game Fest 2026, Hamaguchi emphasized that the central theme of Revelation is "Resolve," referring to the player characters' determination as they approach the final battles. He noted that this theme explores their inner emotions and motivations, which may vary based on player choices, ultimately aiming to foster a deeper connection between the players and the characters. Despite the thematic link, Hamaguchi stated that "Resolve" was never a candidate for the game's title and its "R-E" prefix was a coincidence. The team landed on "Revelation" as it best encapsulated the game's purpose.
The development of the title was kept under tight wraps, with only a small group of five or six individuals privy to the name prior to its public announcement. Hamaguchi mentioned that most of the large development team learned the title during the Summer Game Fest presentation. Previous inquiries about the third entry's name to creative director Tetsuya Nomura had been met with playful deflection, underscoring the secrecy surrounding the announcement.
Regarding potential inspiration from the biblical Book of Revelation, Hamaguchi clarified that while the connection might be made, the developers' intent was more literal. The title "Revelation" signifies the uncovering of answers to questions fans may have regarding the Remake and Rebirth installments, promising a definitive conclusion to the trilogy's overarching narrative. It represents the point where "everything gets revealed" and all outstanding questions are answered.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is slated for release in the first half of 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC. This release will mark the first time a Remake trilogy title launches simultaneously on multiple platforms.
