Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida is investigating methods to make the MMORPG's considerable story content more accessible to new players. The game, which boasts a narrative spanning its base game, A Realm Reborn, and five expansions, with a sixth on the way, requires hundreds of hours to experience its full story. Square Enix has previously made efforts to streamline the player experience by pruning quests, but the sheer volume of content remains a significant commitment for those starting fresh.
Yoshida acknowledged during a media Q&A at the Berlin Fan Festival that the game's extensive nature presents a daunting prospect for new players, particularly those wishing to join friends who are already far into the game. He indicated that two potential initiatives are under consideration, though details remain scarce.
"The first one is something that we will carry out at Evercold's release or before Evercold," Yoshida stated. "The second one involves a system, but we're currently reviewing the possibility of this. We're still considering feasibility and addressing whether or not we would be able to introduce the system. And for these things that I'm talking about, there's a non-zero possibility of us being able to implement it for 8.0. So there is a possibility that we could make it."
Previously, Yoshida had expressed a desire for players to experience the story from its beginning. However, the MMORPG's substantial growth has made accommodating new players' requests a more pressing concern. "I had previously said that I want players to enjoy the story, so I would like them to have a fresh experience right from A Realm Reborn," he said. "But now we are at this point, we've begun thinking about accommodating these kinds of requests."
Further information regarding these potential changes is expected at the Tokyo leg of the Fan Festival later in October. Yoshida conveyed a positive outlook on incorporating new measures to welcome players. The upcoming expansion, Dawntrail, which marks the start of a new narrative arc, has been speculated as a potential point for a revised onboarding experience, serving as a bridge between the previous and upcoming sagas. While concerns exist about the narrative's impact on players who bypass significant portions of the story, making Final Fantasy XIV more appealing to newcomers is seen as a strategic benefit for Square Enix.
