Square Enix has revealed new details regarding upcoming changes in Final Fantasy XIV's Evercold expansion, focusing on modernizing several long-standing features within the massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Producer Naoki Yoshida discussed these updates during a Fan Fest keynote in Berlin, detailing planned overhauls to the main narrative, quest accessibility, combat balancing, and character customization.

Evercold will introduce a new approach to its main narrative quests, which Square Enix is describing as branching. However, this system differs from traditional narrative choice mechanics. Players will begin with a shared initial quest, after which they can undertake subsequent quests in any order they choose before the story converges back to a single path. This design aims to offer players more agency in how they progress through the story, allowing for potentially varied experiences among players while maintaining a consistent overall narrative.

Accessibility in questing is also being addressed. Previously, players were required to teleport to the nearest available point and then travel to their quest giver. For Evercold, the team intends to implement a feature allowing direct teleportation to quest locations. Yoshida noted that the development of this feature is intensive and its full implementation by the expansion's launch is not guaranteed.

To accommodate players approaching quests at different progression points due to the new quest order flexibility, Evercold will feature an auto-balancing system for dungeons and field activities. This system will adjust enemy levels and dungeon difficulty in real-time based on individual player levels, a departure from the current method of syncing all players to a capped level. These changes are initially slated for Evercold's main scenario, with potential for broader application in future updates.

Updates to the duty support system will also alter how players approach instanced content. Beginning with patch 8.1, players will be able to include their Chocobo companions in dungeons. This expands the possibilities for light parties, allowing for combinations of human and Chocobo characters, with the ability to customize the Chocobo's combat role. These duty support updates will not retroactively apply to dungeons from previous expansions.

The armory system is set to receive item level upgrades. This feature will allow players to copy the highest item level gear from one job to another, streamlining the process of assembling job sets. Yoshida clarified that while item levels can be copied, gear parameters influenced by materia will remain unchanged, preserving the incentive to acquire best-in-slot items for specific classes.

Finally, new character action skins will be introduced, offering visual customization for various in-game animations. These skins will replace existing animations for emotes, field actions like teleportation, and some job actions with more elaborate visual effects. Yoshida showcased examples, including a flashy pirouette for the teleport action and a dark energy-themed effect. These customizable animations will be rolled out gradually, starting in patch 8.1, with more actions to follow in subsequent updates. Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is scheduled for release in January for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
