The latest patch for Final Fantasy XIV has introduced the North Horn, the newest and final exploration zone for the current expansion. Alongside new challenges and opportunities for cooperative play, players have uncovered a disturbing hidden area beneath the zone's surface, reminiscent of the 'backrooms' aesthetic.
This unsettling dimension, referred to as the "dark territory," is located at the center of the map. Access requires navigating winding, sloped tunnels guarded by high-level enemies, with some players utilizing stealth abilities to enter undetected. Inside, the environment is characterized by milky, ruined structures and an abundance of disembodied arms reaching into the inky blackness.
The lore surrounding this hidden area, as detailed by ffxivcollect, describes it as a space steeped in Darkness, claimed by vicious voidsent and suffering from the corrupting influence of another realm. Its structures and ground have eroded into an unknown substance. According to the lore, the term 'domain' for voidsent can refer to either a territory or, for more powerful entities, a dimension of their own making, whose inner workings remain a mystery.
This discovery has drawn comparisons to Promyvion, a zone from Final Fantasy XI that shares a similar aesthetic of dark emptiness punctuated by dilapidated structures. The unsettling nature of this secret area has been noted by players on the game's subreddit.
While Final Fantasy XIV's Dawntrail expansion aims to improve the sense of scope and scale in its outdoor zones with a graphical update, the existence of such hidden, intriguing secrets could encourage further player exploration. The dark territory serves as a starkly creepy discovery, offering a glimpse into the unsettling possibilities that can exist even within the familiar landscapes of the game.
