Clive Rosfield, the central figure of 2023's action-oriented Final Fantasy XVI, is set to make a comeback in the forthcoming turn-based role-playing game, Final Fantasy Resonance. Developed by Square Enix, Resonance is scheduled for release on October 22, 2026. This new entry aims to revisit the strategic, turn-based combat that defined earlier Final Fantasy installments, a departure from XVI's real-time action system.
Clive's return is notable, given his popularity among fans, having been voted the second-most popular protagonist in a 2023 poll, trailing only Cloud Strife, who will also appear in Resonance. In Final Fantasy Resonance, Clive will be featured as part of the game's "Visions" system. These Visions function akin to summons from previous titles, allowing players to call upon echoes of iconic Final Fantasy heroes to aid them in battle. The specific Vision of Clive invokes the power of the Eikon Ifrit, capable of unleashing significant fire-based attacks on enemies. Each Vision provides magic power, new attack types, and stat bonuses tailored to the character.
Clive is one of over a dozen established Final Fantasy characters confirmed for Resonance, including the Warrior of Light, Firion, Luneth, Terra, Cecil, Bartz, Cloud, Squall, Zidane, Tidus, Shantotto, Vaan, Lightning, Y'shtola, and Noctis. The game draws inspiration from the mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, incorporating its main cast, which includes knights Rain and Lasswell. Visually, Final Fantasy Resonance will utilize the HD-2D art style, a distinctive aesthetic also employed in Square Enix titles such as Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest I & II.
Final Fantasy Resonance is designed as a single-player experience. Its blend of returning fan-favorite characters and a classic turn-based combat system aims to appeal to both long-time series adherents and newcomers drawn to its distinct visual presentation.
