Intelligent Systems' upcoming Switch 2 title, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, is shaping up to be the most expansive entry in the celebrated strategy RPG series, according to early impressions. The game reportedly dwarfs previous titles like Three Houses and Engage in terms of scale and narrative complexity, offering players a bewildering array of choices and consequences from the outset.

Within the first 10 hours of gameplay, players are presented with decisions that dramatically widen the game's scope. The narrative unfolds as a complex web of interconnected events, with more avenues opening up as the player progresses. This intricate design promises a deeply engaging experience that demands careful attention from players.

The game features four distinct protagonists: Theodora, a warrior queen; Dietrech, a foreign swordsman; Cai, a young boy ensnared in a conspiracy; and Leda, a revenge-driven performer. The depth of these intertwined stories, all managed within a 29.5GB file, highlights the ambitious scope of Fortune's Weave.

"This is not Engage," the preview emphasizes, contrasting the new title with its predecessor's more linear approach. Fortune's Weave is described as a labyrinthine story where players may need a detailed chart to follow the intricate plot threads, a significant departure from the relatively simpler narrative of Three Houses.

The core gameplay loop retains the series' signature turn-based, grid-restricted combat. However, new mechanics and unit types, such as chariots with area-of-effect attacks, offer more strategic depth. Advanced classes can combine offensive capabilities with utility skills, like white magic. Each protagonist also possesses unique, HP-costing abilities that can significantly impact battles, introducing a potent risk-reward element.

Players gain access to a wide array of strategic options much earlier in Fortune's Weave compared to other entries. Early recruitment of new characters and the tinkering of specialist classes allow for the development of highly specific battlefield strategies. Enemy AI is reportedly more challenging, actively targeting weaker units and utilizing critical hits effectively, even in early missions.

Animations and attack sequences have been overhauled, providing dynamic and impactful skirmishes. While critical hits land with a less pronounced impact than in past titles like Path of Radiance, the overall visual presentation is described as remarkable.

Beyond combat, the game incorporates a Persona-style free time system between battles. During these phases, players can interact with numerous NPCs to recruit, train, or bolster their army. Exploring the capital city of Dagison, where the Heroic Games tournament takes place, is a significant undertaking, offering a wealth of activities. These include training at the arena, undertaking tasks for the gods, engaging in side missions, running errands, managing resources for their homeland, upgrading weapons, trading with various companies, performing in plays, visiting the spa, dining at taverns, and encountering random events on the world map. The sheer volume of content suggests that exploration and social interactions may consume more time than the battles themselves.

Character interactions and bond-building are central, with extensive character-specific dialogue and voiced conversations between characters who spend significant time together. This emphasis on relationships strengthens the army and enhances gameplay.

The world map is a large, traversable space requiring advance planning for excursions. A surprising addition to Fortune's Weave is the return of dungeons, reminiscent of Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. These dungeons feature a different combat system, shifting from grid-based SRPG to a turn-based system akin to classic Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest titles. While not overly complex, these dungeons offer a change of pace and a method for leveling up less-utilized combatants.

Despite having only experienced the opening hours, the preview suggests Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave may be one of the best games in the series and the most ambitious title on the Switch 2. The game is set to release on September 17th, 2026, exclusively for the Switch 2.
