Fortnite's ongoing trend of character crossovers has introduced iconic figures from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, including Sonic, Shadow, and Dr. Eggman. However, the execution of these character models has drawn criticism for their unsettling appearance, particularly the elongated proportions.

The unusual design choices have led some to express discomfort, with comparisons drawn to uncanny valley aesthetics and previous controversial character adaptations. One observer described the Sonic model as "frightening," noting that the character appears "stretched to horrifying proportions" and has a "wrong" face, reminiscent of a "half-remembered picture." The Super Sonic quills are also described as "wonky," and the extended height of the characters has been a focal point of the critique.

This design approach is understood to be a consequence of Fortnite's technical requirements. To maintain hitbox consistency across all characters in the game, new additions must adhere to specific height and width parameters. This constraint appears to have forced developers to alter the canonical proportions of Sonic and Shadow, leading to the unnervingly stretched figures.

Despite the potential for creative adaptation, the decision to distort the characters' forms rather than work within their established appearances has been met with disappointment. The current models have been likened to "Great Value" versions of the characters or as if they were "put through a pasta extruder," highlighting a sentiment that the adaptations have missed the mark and resulted in an unsettling visual.
