Fortnite is experiencing a notable surge in player activity, largely driven by the appeal of its new Sprite collection and battle royale mechanics. Over 1.2 million players were active in Fortnite's core battle royale modes on a recent Saturday afternoon, during two two-hour "Power Hour" events that significantly boosted the spawn rates of rare Sprites. This level of engagement represents Fortnite's largest battle royale player count since March, with overall player numbers showing a noticeable increase at the end of the game's previous season, even outside of the "Power Hour" spikes.

The game's new extraction, collection, and leveling systems, which involve finding gameplay-impacting Sprites, enhancing their abilities, and securing them for future matches via extraction points, have resonated strongly with players. The popularity of these creatures has even led to some fans attempting to sell rare varieties on eBay, a practice that developer Epic Games has stated it is actively addressing as it violates Fortnite's rules.

Fortnite features ultra-rare shiny variants of each Sprite. While these are exceptionally scarce, the game does allow players to share and trade creatures with teammates. This facilitates the circulation of even the rarest Sprites, such as the Galaxy Zero Point Sprite, which reportedly has a drop rate of 0.0000014%.

Five new Sprite varieties are set to be introduced with the game's next update, scheduled for Thursday, June 25. These include the Striker Sprite, which grants an Overdrive boost when Mantling or Hurdling and is unlocked by scoring a goal at the new Football Pitch; the Fishy Sprite, enhancing swim speed and providing a brief movement speed boost when damaged; the Aura Sprite, which offers a Shock Rock charge after dealing sufficient damage; the Boss Sprite, increasing maximum Health and Shield and dropped by any Boss; and the Grim Reaper Sprite, which marks any player who attacks you for a duration.

Epic Games plans to release additional Sprites weekly throughout the season, including several designed by the community.
