FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has reassured fans that the studio has not shifted its focus away from single-player game development, despite a recent string of multiplayer-oriented titles. Following the co-operative experience of Elden Ring: Nightreign and the upcoming PvPvE multiplayer game The Duskbloods, questions had arisen about the developer's future direction.
Miyazaki stated that the studio maintains a strong emphasis on single-player content and that the recent release schedule was a matter of opportunity rather than a deliberate strategic shift. "It's not necessarily some big reveal saying this is the direction we plan to go in moving forward. We still have a heavy focus on single-player content as well. This is just something that happened to work out the way it did," Miyazaki explained in an interview. He added that there was no grand plan for The Duskbloods and Elden Ring: Nightreign to release so close together.
The director elaborated that many game ideas had accumulated over the years, and The Duskbloods provided a suitable avenue to explore concepts that might not have fit within a traditional single-player framework, drawing inspiration from board games and TTRPGs. Miyazaki also expressed personal enjoyment in creating multiplayer experiences, noting it's an area FromSoftware has not extensively explored. He is keen to observe player reactions and gather feedback on these titles.
Miyazaki concluded by remarking that working on multiplayer games for an extended period often intensifies the desire to return to single-player development. In an industry where live-service multiplayer success is a significant trend, FromSoftware's continued commitment to its legacy of acclaimed single-player games offers a measure of certainty for its fanbase.
