Frontier Developments, the studio behind Planet Zoo and Planet Coaster, has announced a new entry in its "Planet" franchise. This upcoming title will feature a "completely new setting" and will not involve zoos or rollercoasters, diverging from its predecessors.
The game is described as a strategy management title that combines creativity, management, and simulation, familiar elements from the existing Planet series. Richard Stephenson, head of player engagement at Frontier, shared in a Discord post that the new franchise aims to offer the same core experience but in an unfamiliar environment for the studio. This marks a significant shift from the themepark and animal collection themes of Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo.
Frontier has a diverse portfolio that includes other simulation and strategy games such as Jurassic World Evolution, Elite Dangerous, F1 Manager, and Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Realms of Ruin. The announcement suggests this new Planet game will explore a different genre or theme not yet covered by these existing titles.
Details regarding a release date remain scarce, but Frontier's latest earnings report indicates that a new original intellectual property in the construction and management simulation (CMS) genre is confirmed for fiscal year 2028. This timeline suggests players will have to wait some time to hear more about the project.
