Game Freak, known for the Pokémon series, is preparing to launch its new action RPG, Beast of Reincarnation, on August 4 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Recent previews indicate that the game offers a significant challenge, encouraging players to carefully learn its mechanics rather than rush through its opening hours. Early impressions suggest a demanding combat system that draws parallels to FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, though with potentially more flexibility in player approach.

Players beginning Beast of Reincarnation may find the initial narrative somewhat obscure. The game's post-apocalyptic story is described as minimalistic and cryptic in its early stages. One preview noted a limited understanding of the plot, grasping only that the main characters, Emma and Koo, are beings capable of defeating infected creatures. Their role appears to involve cleansing the world of these corrupted entities.

The combat, while challenging, is not expected to reach the punishing levels of Soulslike titles. Previews suggest that the parry windows are more forgiving than those in Sekiro, offering greater room for error. Furthermore, Beast of Reincarnation seems to provide players with more tactical options, including magic systems and abilities that can be utilized during paused action sequences. This allows for a more varied playstyle compared to games that might enforce a more specific approach.

Difficulties encountered in early play sessions were partly attributed to the game's minimal mechanical explanations. Some players found the early tutorials to be insufficient, and it was only later, upon reaching save points, that they discovered an in-game tutorial codex. This resource offers detailed information on the RPG systems, but it requires players to actively seek it out. Without the time constraints of a preview event, players are expected to have a better opportunity to engage with these learning tools.

One previewer described struggling with a boss fight against a large stag known as a Nushi, admitting they had not fully grasped the game's mechanics. The expected explanation of advanced combat features, such as finishers or the charging bars for Emma, did not materialize during the encounter. The function of these bars, which vaguely resembled Kratos's Spartan Rage from God of War, remained unclear, leading to avoidable damage.

Despite its departure from the family-friendly nature of Pokémon, Beast of Reincarnation incorporates environmental themes and a focus on human-animal cooperation. Emma's canine companion, Koo, assists in combat and also aids in exploration by locating secrets and items. Koo's alerts for nearby enemies and items are nuanced, sometimes involving direct retrieval of items or subtle cues indicating their presence. This varied approach aims to make exploration and combat feel more integrated.

Director Kota Furushima stated that Koo was designed not to be an autonomous tool or an overly demanding companion for the player. The wolf can be incapacitated, but previews indicated that player characters are more likely to fall before their canine ally. Beast of Reincarnation is set to release in under a month, with its launch scheduled for August 4.
