Game Informer is commemorating its 35th anniversary, reflecting on its extensive history and the evolution of the gaming industry since its inception. Founded in 1991, the magazine launched its first issue featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, coinciding with significant global events and the early days of the World Wide Web and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System's North American debut.
Throughout its 380 issues, Game Informer has aimed to serve as a trusted source for gaming news and insights, chronicling the rise of video games to mainstream prominence. The publication highlights its role in covering influential titles that have defined eras, from early classics like Super Mario 64 and Final Fantasy VII to more recent landmarks such as The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, Elden Ring, and Hades II.
To honor this milestone, print subscribers will receive a poster in their upcoming issue that showcases the magazine's diverse cover history. The anniversary issue also features a retrospective on notable covers, with commentary from past and present staff, as well as industry figures including Tony Hawk, Ken Levine, Sean Murray, and Yoshinori Kitase.
Beyond the current issue, Game Informer's 35th-anniversary celebrations include several new initiatives. The magazine is introducing international print subscriptions and preparing to launch a dedicated mobile application. Additionally, Game Informer plans a significant presence at Gamescom and will feature special guests from its history on The Game Informer Show in September. The anniversary events are set to continue throughout the remainder of the year, with upcoming cover stories promising exclusive deep-dives into highly anticipated games.
