The Coalition has detailed its approach to multiplayer for the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day, emphasizing a return to traditional progression systems that eschew modern live-service trends.
Multiplayer in E-Day will feature both Horde Siege (PvE) and Versus (PvP) modes. The studio aims for a "return to old school" feel, incorporating classic arena modes, mirrored loadouts, and limited customization options. This philosophy extends to how players will unlock content.
"Nearly every single item in Gears of War: E-Day can be earned by simply playing the game. That means no battle pass, no tour of duty, no gimmicks, no bullshit," the studio stated in a multiplayer deep dive blog post. This approach means that most of the 60 unlockable characters available at launch will be obtainable through challenges or in-game currency earned by playing.
The game is planned to receive five seasons of content post-launch, which are expected to include free maps, modes, and cosmetics. While the focus is on in-game unlocks, The Coalition acknowledged that there will be occasional "partnered items" available for purchase, which they intend to integrate thoughtfully into the Gears universe. Cosmetic items are designed to be grounded in the brand's aesthetic, with a focus on original characters and world elements rather than promotional cross-overs. Legendary skins may offer more imaginative designs, sometimes drawing inspiration from the wider Gears lore and symbolism.
To avoid excessive grinding, E-Day will feature "Coins," a free-to-earn currency acquired through gameplay, leveling, and completing medals. The studio has set a weekly cap on Coins earned from matches but plans to monitor player feedback for potential adjustments. The aim is for unlocking items to remain an enjoyable experience rather than a chore. For those seeking immediate access to cosmetics, a premium currency called "Iron" will be available to bypass the need for grinding Coins, though the studio insists the core unlock system prioritizes gameplay.
