George R.R. Martin, the acclaimed author behind "A Song of Ice and Fire," is actively developing a fourth installment in his "Dunk and Egg" novella series. This news comes directly from Ira Parker, the showrunner for the upcoming HBO adaptation, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."
Parker revealed Martin's progress on the new book during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. While the "Dunk and Egg" adaptation has been greenlit for up to two seasons, Parker expressed a desire to expand the live-action series, potentially to three, four, or even five seasons. The continuation of the show may be influenced by the timely completion of Martin's next "Dunk and Egg" story.
Parker teased that the fourth book will be set in a "very cool location." He also indicated that the fifth story would mark the end of Egg's childhood, providing a natural narrative pause. This would allow for a break before potentially depicting Egg as a prince, exploring political intrigue and events at Summerhall and King's Landing, and shifting the series' focus from constant travel.
Currently, the "Dunk and Egg" series comprises three novellas: "The Hedge Knight," "The Sworn Sword," and "The Mystery Knight." Martin has previously voiced his intention to continue this series, though the exact release window for the fourth novella remains undisclosed. This development occurs while anticipation builds for the notoriously delayed "The Winds of Winter," the penultimate novel in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.
Regarding "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," Parker discussed the possibility of taking hiatuses between later seasons to allow the young lead actors to mature. While HBO executives have reportedly reacted with skepticism, they have not entirely dismissed the idea. Parker envisions the show evolving alongside its cast and creative team, reflecting their growth and changing perspectives over time.
Parker also noted that Martin has provided the production team with around 12 outlines for future stories, offering a rough roadmap for the series' potential expansion. He also shared that the team has had access to some of Martin's unpublished writings, incorporating them into the show. The first season of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is set to premiere in late 2025.
