A special 30th-anniversary edition of George R.R. Martin's seminal fantasy novel, A Game of Thrones, has sold out shortly after its release. The meticulously produced volume, published by The Folio Society, features exclusive illustrations by artist Jonathan Burton and a new introduction by author Joe Abercrombie.

The Illustrated A Game of Thrones is an 872-page, single-volume collection of the first book in the series. Limited to 1,000 copies, the hand-bound leather edition is printed on bespoke paper, edged in real gold, and signed by Martin himself. Each copy is presented in a clamshell box that includes a linen map of Westeros. The Folio Society has stated the binding uses "dragon leather," though this is likely a fanciful description.

Despite its £1,500 (approximately $2,200 USD) price tag and the ongoing wait for the series' conclusion, the book saw immense demand. Over 900 of the 1,000 available copies were purchased within the first three hours of its release on July 14. The exclusive sale took place on The Folio Society's website.

Jonathan Burton created his illustrations for the book without reference to the HBO television adaptation, offering a distinct visual interpretation of Martin's characters and narrative. While most of his artwork remains within the book, some pieces are available as separate prints.

This collector's edition appears to be the primary commemoration of the 30th anniversary of A Game of Thrones' initial publication. Elsewhere in the Game of Thrones universe, a new play titled The Mad King, set 10 years prior to the events of A Game of Thrones, is slated to premiere with the Royal Shakespeare Company on August 8, with previews beginning July 20. The play features Michael Shaeffer as King Aerys II Targaryen.
